    Tigers 3, Yankees 3 (AP)

Josh Phelps might be forcing the New York Yankees to platoon him with Doug Mientkiewicz. A day after making New York’s opening-day roster, Phelps finished spring training with his fourth home run as New York played a 3-3 tie with the Detroit Tigers on Saturday. Phelps beat out Andy Phillips for a spot on the […]

BASEBALL 2007: Key dates for the 2007 baseball season (AP)

BASEBALL 2007: Unseen Boss: Steinbrenner’s grip on pinstripes loosens (AP)

George Steinbrenner’s grip on the New York Yankees is looser now. That’s easy to see, the moment you walk into his ballpark. Down in the dugout, Joe Torre remains as manager after six straight seasons without a World Series title. Gary Sheffield, a longtime favorite personally recruited by the owner in 2003, is gone, dealt […]

    BASEBALL 2007: Parity reigns (AP)

Barry Zito thought about the San Francisco Giants’ chances and was pretty pleased. Payroll no longer is supreme when it comes to World Series titles. “In 2002, the wild card won. In ‘03 the wild card won. And in ‘04, Boston was the wild card and won,” he said. “That’s what’s great about baseball.” […]

BASEBALL 2007: Radar gun readings are all the rage (AP)

The little righty wearing the Bob Feller jersey squeezed the ball, cranked up and let fly with all his might. Seemed pretty pleased with his heater, until he stepped back and saw the radar reading: 29 mph. As the 9-year-old trudged away, too embarrassed to look at his dad, the man running the speed […]

Rogers has surgery to remove blood clot, out until July (AP)

Kenny Rogers won’t start his season until summer — maybe later. A key part of the pitching staff that led the surprising Detroit Tigers to the AL pennant last year, Rogers is out until at least the All-Star break following surgery Friday to remove a blood clot from his left shoulder and repair arteries.

Strawberry: There’s only 1 Boss (AP)

Darryl Strawberry can’t imagine the New York Yankees without George Steinbrenner. “To me, there’s only one person that can run the Yankees and that’s the Boss,” Strawberry said Friday as Major League baseball launched its new line of game caps. Steinbrenner’s daughter Jennifer filed for divorce from husband Steve Swindal on Tuesday in Tampa, Fla.

Pavano to start Yankees’ opener (AP)

Carl Pavano will have a chance at redemption right away. The much maligned pitcher will be the New York Yankees’ opening-day starter on Monday against visiting Tampa Bay — his first time on the mound in the major leagues since June 27, 2005. Pavano will be followed in the rotation by Andy Pettitte, Mike Mussina […]
