Why did the Yankees sign second baseman Robinson Cano to a long-term deal, but not right-hander Chien-Ming Wang? The answer is in the cautionary tale of pitchers and extended contracts.
Wang will be 28 on March 31, and the Yankees will have him under their control until 2010. Even in dealing with their own young stars, the Yanks’ days of handing out large multi-year contracts to pitchers appear to be over.
That theory has extended to relievers, too. Instead of giving right-hander Luis Vizcaino a two-year deal (which he eventually received from Colorado), the Yankees signed free agent right-hander LaTroy Hawkins to a one-year contract.
